Tools Leading to Primary Sources
Below are some databases and tools that will lead you to magazine and newspaper articles that may qualify as primary sources.
One good resource is the Reader's Guide Retrospective database, which will help you locate articles from popular magazines. You can limit your search by date and sort by relevance so that you get the most useful results.
In the example below, I have entered suburb* and women. The * at the end of suburb will tell the database to find suburb but also other forms of the word, such as suburbs, suburban, and suburbia.

Online archive "of over 60,000 'ephemeral' (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films." - Providence Journal Index, via Providence Public Library

The Providence Public Library maintained a daily index to the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin for 1900-2004. While you'll need to visit the Providence Public Library in person to use it, this is the best way to find local news articles prior to 1983.
