Using this Guide

Greetings!  This guide is designed to help you locate chronologies and historical timelines for a variety of subjects.  You will find resources to help you locate chronologies and find out about events that ocurred on a specific date in the past (such as your birthday!), a specific year, or a decade. Additional information can be identified by doing a subject search in the HELIN Catalog using the subject terms CHRONOLOGY, or HISTORY.  More specific subject chronologies can be identified by combining the subject with chronology, such as SCIENCE -- HISTORY -- CHRONOLOGY or INVENTIONS -- HISTORY -- CHRONOLOGY.

The guide is divided into pages that present "General History," "United States History," and "Subject Chronologies."  Choose the page you would like to view by clicking on the yellow tabs above.

Good luck with your search!  Please don't hesitate to contact a librarian for futher assistance.

    A Note About Dates

In dealing with specific dates, especially in Europe and the United States, it is important to be familiar with the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar. The Gregorian Calendar first appears in 1582, although the British Empire (including the colonies which would become the U.S.) did not switch over until September 1752. The Russian Empire never switched to the Gregorian Calendar, hence the occasional confusion over dates during the Russian Revolution of 1917. Visit the NASA Eclipse web site for more information about calendars.
