Welcome to the Carothers Library guide for Women's Studies (WMS) at URI. Here, you'll learn how to find the best information for your research assignments, from books to journal articles to quality online resources.

The menu on the left displays the reference desk hours and how to get in touch with us; remember, during these times you can always call or chat with a librarian if you need assistance! To the right is the contact information for Mary MacDonald, your liaison librarian for Women's Studies. The tabs above introduce you to useful materials by category. Within the tabs, you'll find helpful instructions on how to search each type of resource:

Library Orientation shows you how to get the most out of the resources at Carothers Library. Click on this tab if you need instructions or a quick refresher on how to search the HELIN catalog or the library databases; basics of academic research; and proper ways to cite resources.

Reference Materials offer an assortment of some of our best encylopedias and handbooks; these are most useful as you begin a research project and will help you gain familiarity with an issue or topic.

Books explore a topic in depth and often provide valuable historical background. Follow our search tips to zero in on relevant titles.

Journals are the place to go once you have developed a research question or thesis and you want to examine aspects of a topic in detail. Examples of search strategies are provided.

Online Resources can provide a general overview of a topic as well as very specific data such as statistics, depending on the site and where you look. Resources are organized by broader topics within women's studies such as advocacy, health and education. On the right hand side of the page is a link to an assortment of relevant blogs that may be useful.

Associations and Organizations offer its members opportunities for personal and professional development.  Visit the links under this tab and explore ways to get involved at local, regional, national and international levels in issues important to all women.
