This guide provides a brief introduction to the features and functions of reference managers and citation generators supported at URI, RefWorks and Zotero.

Features at a Glance
RefWorks and Zotero are reference managers with some bonus features.
Zotero is a "freemium" product, meaning you get a certain amount of storage for free, but once you hit the limit, you will need to pay for additional storage.
URI subscribes to RefWorks, which means users have access to its full range of features, and can get technical support from RefWorks experts.

Which should I use?
To determine which citation manager is best for you, consider how you search for and access information.
RefWorks is cloud-based but does store a copy of your citations in Microsoft Word. You can also connect it to Google Docs. It works best if you have consistent internet access.
Zotero has a standalone app and browser-based functionality, and works on Macs, PCs, and Linux. This is a good choice if you aren't always connected to the internet.
Zotero has the ability to sync your collection of information across computers and with their servers. You can connect RefWorks to Dropbox to save your collection locally.
What about EndNote?
The University Libraries do not provide support for EndNote as users need to pay for their own subscriptions, but EndNote training is available from the manufacturer. RefWorks is an excellent alternative.
If you do wish to configure a purchased copy of EndNote to access full text from URI, there are two pieces of information you will need: the OpenURL Path and the Authenticate With URL.
In the EndNote application, go to File > Preferences > Find Full Text. There you must enter this information and click Apply:
