This guide serves as an introduction to citizen science and highlights available resources for those new and experienced in citizen science work.

Local Projects

URI Watershed Watch: Providing more than thirty years of water quality data for the state of Rhode Island, URI Watershed Watch aims to educate the community regarding local water quality issues and  engage citizens in protecting water quality by training volunteers to collect weekly measurements of bodies of water throughout the year. 

Finding Online Projects

Citizenscience.gov logo

CitizenScience.gov is overseen by the U.S. General Services Administration and provides an extensive catalog of citizen science projects overseen by government organizations like NASA, NOAA, NIH, and the EPA.  Visit their catalog to view projects by status, governing agency, or field of science.

Zooniverse logo

Zooniverse is one of the largest and most popular platforms for crowdsourcing research, enlisting more than one million people from around the world to help researchers.  Zooniverse has a wide range of citizen science projects that can be searched for by discipline (e.g. biology, climate, medicine) as well as a number of humanities projects, like the transcription of historical records.

Scistarter is a well-known citizen science hub that contains more than 3000 projects.  Projects can be searched by location, topic, age level, and other criteria.
