Interviews

You might have an interview! What should you expect? The answer will vary by library and position.

  • Public library interview? This may be shorter, and you may meet with various members of the library staff. Expect it to last a few hours.
  • Non tenure track academic library interview? May be several hours to half a day. The interviewers might treat you to lunch, but maybe not. They may reimburse you for travel and/or parking. Expect to do a presentation of some sort as part of the interview.
  • Tenure track position? They will pay for your travel to the location, and put you up in a hotel for the night if you're coming from out of town. Expect to have dinner with members of the search committee, and to meet with them for breakfast and lunch the next day. Bring a bottle of water, but they should also offer it! You will likely be asked to give a presentation.

What to wear?

The general consensus is to dress more formally than you would if you got the position. For most MLIS-level positions, a suit is standard, although a coordinating jacket and pants can also work.

Make sure your outfit is comfortable, in case you do have a long interview on a hot day! (One of us interviewed at a library where the air conditioning was broken and the librarians were in t-shirts and shorts.)
