Highlighting Your Excellent Work, or How To Brag Nicely Because Your Career Depends On It
Amanda just had a conversation with a school librarian who noted that she's just not good at and uncomfortable with bragging about the work she's done. This led to the school librarian not being renewed at a position she was in (she wasn't heartbroken, to be honest, and her new job is a better fit), and she knew it was a challenge. A 2022 Library Journal article about the librarians at Texas A&M University losing their faculty status noted that, "...we did not do a very good job of demonstrating how we specifically contribute to university priorities.” Highlighting your work is very important. If bragging is uncomfortable for you, consider what you're doing as highlighting your accomplishments and important work, and tie it into the mission of your organization.
Although you're mostly spared meetings while you're a Reffie, librarians attend and lead a variety of meetings regularly. Here are some tips on what to do when you've got a meeting on your schedule.
