Circulation & Borrowing

Information about Circulation, Borrowing, and Library Access.

Group Study Rooms

Group study rooms are located on all floors of the Robert L. Carothers Library & Learning Commons.  They are checked out on a first come, first served basis for three hours.

  • Lower Level, 14 rooms
  • First Floor, 5 rooms
  • Second Floor, 13 rooms
  • Third Floor, 4 rooms

With the exception of the 8 rooms on the second floor, all the study rooms are large enough to accommodate group study work.  The 8 smaller rooms can fit either 2 students or just a single student.  Despite the varying sizes, if an individual requires a study room and all the smaller rooms are checked out, that individual can check out one of the large study rooms.

These rooms are available solely for students, both undergraduate and graduate.

Checking out a study room

  • A physical ID is needed to check out a room key.
  • The student who checks out the room key at the Circulation Desk, whether by themself or with a group, must leave their URI ID at the Circulation Desk during the three hour time period the room is in use.
  • A room can be renewed only if no one is waiting to check out a room.
  • If the original key holder must leave, the room can be checked to another person within the study group.  IF no one is waiting to check out a room.

Study Room Policies

  1. If the key is not returned to the Circulation Desk, an hourly fee of $10.00 will be charged to the student's record.  If the student fails to return the key by the end of the business day, an eCampus Sanction will be placed upon their record.  Additionally, the student's library privileges will be blocked.  All sanctions will be removed upon return of the key or payment for the key.
  2. Group Study Rooms are not available for students taking online exams.  The Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning offers proctoring services through the Academic Testing Center that are intended to meet these needs.
